SHANGHAI QUARTET

Over the past thirty-seven years, the Shanghai Quartet has become one of the world's foremost chamber ensembles. Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983 (soon after the end of China's harrowing Cultural Revolution), members of the group came to the United States to complete their studies; since then they have been based in the U.S. while maintaining a robust touring schedule throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Master of the Western string quartet repertoire, the Shanghai Quartet also has a long history of championing new music, with a special interest in works that juxtapose Eastern and Western musical traditions.

Serving as quartet-in-residence at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University since 2002, the group also becomes resident faculty at the Tianjin Julliard School in fall 2020.

"This being 'their' piece (Penderecki's Quartet no. 3, written for them) and a work that the Shaghai is obviously deeply committed to, they performed it with great relish and gusto, with carefully coordinated effects that were astonishing in their impact and with constant tension palpable." Chicago Classical Review
